Translational Research

Through Gabriel Sciences, a biotech company with the mission of furthering the understanding and treatment of mental illness, Dr. Pickar continues his translational research (translating scientific discoveries into practical applications) that he originally began as  branch chief at National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) where he served for 22 years.  Founded by Dr. Pickar, Gabriel Sciences has been the recipient of NIH SBIR (Small Business Innovative Research) Phase I and Phase II grants for the development of a clinical DNA database enabling predictors of antipsychotic drug response. Gabriel Sciences and Dr. Pickar were recently awarded an SBIR grant for a collaborative project to take a lead compound for treating depression into preclinical toxicology testing prior to initial studies in humans. The current antidepressant program adds to Gabriel Sciences’ portfolio of drug development for the treatment of mental illness.
